Meet the Midwives

Hello!

Eleanor, Jill and Sharon

We are three experienced midwives who have been fortunate enough to have worked together since we met in 2003.  Initially, we worked in an NHS caseloading team in Southampton, Eleanor went into Independent Practice in Sept 2004, with Sharon joining her a year later in 2005.  Since then, Jill joined us working for Neighbourhood Midwives in 2015. Since Feb 2019, we have all worked with Private Midwives.  We all share the same philosophy and feel blessed that we are able to work together supporting women and their families.

Eleanor May-Johnson

I was fascinated by pregnancy and birth as an teenager but it wasn’t until my third daughter started nursery, that I was able train to become a midwife. I graduated from Bournemouth University in 2003 and have been a caseload midwife ever since, both in the NHS and the independent sector.

In 2013,  I launched Neighbourhood Midwives along with 3 midwifery colleagues, working as the organisations' Clinical Co-ordinator.   Throughout my time at Neighbourhood Midwives, I kept a clinical aspect to my role and continued to provide midwifery care to a small caseload of women and tongue tie division in my weekly Oxfordshire clinic.

Since Neighbourhood Midwives closed in Jan 2019, I have returned to Independent Practice and now provide antenatal and postnatal care to women in the Hampshire area.  I am also a qualified tongue tie practitioner and run a weekly session in Wantage, Oxfordshire, as well as offering home appointments to families in the Southampton and surrounding areas.

I am still as passionate about midwifery as ever and it has been my great privilege to share the journey through pregnancy, birth and into parenthood with the women and families I care for.  I have experience in VBAC (sometimes after several caesarean sections), HBAC, homebirth,  waterbirth, twins (both at home and in hospital) and breech birth.  I have also cared for many women with complex medical and emotional needs.  Due to a recent back injury, I have had to make the decision to stop providing labour and birth care.

I am available on 07900 951571 or email me: eleanor@privatemidwives.com

I see my midwifery qualification as one of the proudest achievements in my life, along with the births of my five children! I have been a midwife since 2005 and feel hugely privileged to have been the guardian to many a new life coming into this world, including my seven gorgeous grandchildren.

I am a passionate midwife who believes that every woman's journey is hers to own.  I am only here to guide and support her and to provide personalised care, tailored to the individual needs of each woman and her family. I feel truly blessed every time I am invited to share the wonderful journey into parenthood with a couple.  I believe that every woman should have the choice to birth "her baby, her way" in a safe and calm environment.  I have experience in VBAC/HBAC, waterbirth and twins (both at home and in hospital).

I live near Southampton and I currently only offer private tongue tie division as I am working full time as the practice development midwife for Private Midwives.

If you are interested in tongue tie division please call me on 07725 840692 or email: sharon@privatemidwives.com

Jill Hutchings

I began my journey as a midwife in 1996. It was a hugely proud moment and one of my greatest achievements along with the birth of my two sons.

My passion is supporting women through the most extraordinary journey of their lives as they make the transition to parenthood. I feel very privileged to have shared so many journeys as a caseload midwife within the NHS. My last NHS role was as a community coordinator supporting women and midwives and a dedicated team of maternity support workers to provide breastfeeding support and advice and continuity during the early days and weeks with the new families in Southampton

I believe in continuity of carer and the importance of empowering women to make choices that are right for them. I feel passionate that all women should be able to have continuity of a midwife they know and trust, who is their advocate and guide to enable them to give birth to a healthy baby in a safe and satisfying way, in the place of their choosing.

I am a keen walker and support many charities and in the last year I have walked 100km along the Thames Path as part of action challenge to raise money and awareness.

I currently cover Hampshire (Portsmouth, Gosport, Fareham, Waterlooville and surrounding areas).  I only provide antenatal or postnatal packages as well as tongue tie division.    You can call me on 07809 744942 or email: jill@privatemidwives.com
